We'd like to get out of our basement-apartment-living-situation, as the upstairs neighbors aren't exactly "light walkers" if you know what I mean... Not to mention the fact that we sit on patio furniture because I refuse to buy new household items until we get a real place. What's the point when there is a pretty good chance you might get deported, right?

The holidays came and went, and not fast enough I should add. Since we can't visit our family at this delicate time, holidays just aren't the same. Yes, my partner and I consider each other family, but let's face it-- 1: I can't cook like my mom so I'm going to try it unless she's giving individual lessons 2: we don't fight with one another and holidays are not as fun without a couple of good old tussles with your siblings--I miss fighting with my brothers (huge part of my upbringing actually)... Needless to say, I am glad they are over!

There is a recession currently, and unfortunately Stephen Harper is still the Prime Minister. Come on Canada! Are you serious with this guy? Seriously? The picture below says exactly what I think about Mr. Harper. Politically correct? not so much. Figuratively correct? perhaps. Could it be worse politically here? Nope.

And lastly, it's still far too cold out!

Deep down, I know I shouldn't complain because I know things could be far worse, so kindly forgive me. But since this is my blog and nobody reads it, I can basically talk about whatever I want!

I need a vacation. One with sand and ocean and lots of skin showing everywhere and beer during the day... Are there any places like that in Canada?

If you can think of a way to put me back in "glass half full mode", I'd really, really love to hear it. And don't say zoloft or viagra or whateverelsefuckingpillpeopleseemtobepoppingthesedays... all those things do is cause side effects!

OK ... I know that only about 2 people read this!)

I had to take a break. Let's face it--keeping up with the news and the way in which humans conduct business on this planet is just intolerable. Am I pessimistic? Perhaps. So I needed a much deserved break. I spent this "break" watching TLC instead of CBC... thus I will be blogging about "Little People Big World" sometimes because it's a great show ;)

While on said blogging break, I've reconnected with my true passion, which is coaching. And aside from that, I've been concentrating on work. And yes, don't fret, "Stories from The Gym" will continue! So much drama to bring you up to date on...

On the War Resister front, I am currently dealing with the fact that I have to make call-ins each month requiring my voice to be recognized by a computer. No, it's not a big deal, but it makes me feel like a criminal. I am not a criminal. The fact that I disagree (with all of my being) with a war that is both immoral and illegal is not criminal. Yet Canada has a knack of making me feel like a felon. It is a very interesting way to experience anger. Usually there is someone or something you can address... in our case the entity holding us back is much larger than most of everyone.

But no worries... The economy is tanking and the fitness industry is simply an unstable place... but in some instances, when certain people are terminated it's questionable.

Nox's pink-slip was quite unexpected by all. In fact, I was in the middle of training one of my favorite clients when he came over to say "goodbye". It was all very dramatic. It just so happened that Relative and Portugal were hitting the weights, in the same area, when he came back to announce his shortcomings.

We were all (EVERYONE) pretty shocked and some were a bit angered. Usually, when someone is let go most people expect it. For example, a trainer was let go just last week, but it never made headlines because, well we all expected it. But today, as Nox let us know, in his shaky voice--holding back tears in his eyes--it just seemed wrong.

I think the wrongness of the situation stems from the fact that he worked hard, he wasn't a slacker, and he was liked by most. Apparently his team was behind in sales and the General Manager--Slouch--didn't exactly like him. Although, the fact remains, whenever any of us needed a manager to help us out, he was always there. He seemed like he liked his job--and he was real on the days when he didn't.

In short, it makes one wonder about their own personal longevity in a place that does't seem to care about much other than bringing in revenue.

So, in short, I'm feeling bad about what happened to poor Nox and I'm thinking, it's definitely time to discontinue my relationship with corporations...

Thoughts?

The Life and Times of a Cyclist.

I am freezing, cranky and bruised while I type this, as tonight happens to be the first time I cycled home from work in the snow.

I am a cyclist--well, by default actually. My partner is a passionate environmentalist who insisted we sell our vehicle and instead, cycle everywhere in order to "do our part". And while I was all for it (April through October)--November is turning out to be an entirely different story.

This evening, as I left work, I decided to check my breaks. It was the smart thing to do right? Make sure they work well in the snow. So I rode for about ten feet and then pressed the breaks. Bad idea. As soon as I squeezed my hands I was flying towards the ground. It was dark, I was lying in the middle of the road, and I banged the crap out of my leg. Whenever something like this happens to me--something like falling--whether it's on a sports field or off of my bike, I often have the urge to just lie there for a moment...I'm not sure why. Tonight however, the speed with which I jumped up from the pavement was fast enough to make any witness question if I had even fallen in the first place. I'm not sure if it was because I was cold or because I was terrified of being run over. From that moment on, I decided that breaking hard was probably not what a genius might do and I rode slowly--breaking lightly while dragging my toe along the ground.

Halfway through my ride was when it got scary. There were more cars--driving REALLY fast--and the bike lane was filled with snow. I could have rode in the street but I was afraid of getting hit by a car--drivers don't pay too much attention these days no matter how many flashing lights you have strapped to you. While riding in the snowy bike lane I fell again, but thankfully this time I fell away from traffic.

After falling twice and being scared out of my wits tonight I am not so sure how committed I am to this riding through the winter deal. I could take the TTC, but I know that it will take 3 times as long, so I don't know what to do. I guess I'll keep whining on my blog, pray to stay upright, ride really slow, affix additional lights to my body, and HOPE with all of my might that winter ends a hell of a lot sooner than usual... First an update: I should let you know that since the "Stability Ball Incident", I have not seen "Ms. H". However, some other characters have rolled through our double doors it seems...

It's no secret that there are some seriously interesting individuals who use our gym. Realistically speaking, anytime you have a large community of people, there are bound to be a couple of us who are interesting right?

Currently the room where trainers usually throw/stuff/pile their things is under construction--which is a BIG, HUGE deal (things literally take 6-9 months to get done when working within a corporate setting). Back to it--now that our closet-sized room, where approx. 16 people store their things is being renovated, we are condemned to using the women's and men's locker rooms. Now... don't get me wrong here--many believe that it's a privilege to be able to put our lowly things there--but I say I'd rather have my renovated closet. Here's why:

The locker room, though clean, large, and nicely decorated, is a strange an awkward place filled with lots of naked people conducting many, very common, naked-rituals. These rituals include, but are not limited to: blow drying or flat ironing hair when naked, air drying ones genitals with the use of a swinging towel--while naked, make-up application while naked, etc. These are things that one simply gets used to. And if one does not enjoy or feel comfortable being around these rituals... well one puts their head down, grabs their bag as quickly as possible and then makes a bee-line for the door. But here is my question: what does one do when someone falls far beyond the norm?

Today Portugal informed me that such an occurance happened two nights ago and I was AGAST with utter shock! hah a haha ...wait for it... Portugal told me that one of his clients, after a long and sweaty training session, innocently entered the locker room expecting the norm--lots of older women fanning their crotches with towels--but was completely taken aback when she looked over to observe a women CHANGING HER TAMPON in the middle of the change room amidst rush hour traffic...

please pause to think about this... I did.

During my pause I wondered, was she simply inserting a new tampon? After I paused, I asked outloud, but to my fear, the woman was indeed employed in the public removal and insertion of tampons.

Who the HECK does that?

Excuse my American... but honestly! He wrote and starred in the original British version of The Office, where he played the dunderheaded boss, David Brent. In his next series, Extras, he played the slightly more with-it Andy Millman.

It took coming to the United States to really find his stride, however, he tells NPR's Madeleine Brand. This Saturday, Gervais makes his American TV stand-up debut on HBO with Ricky Gervais: Out of England, which was recorded in New York's Madison Square Garden.

It's his best work yet, he says. There was something about performing for a bunch of Americans that left the famed funny man feeling wild and free.

"I don't know whether I am under more scrutiny in my own country, but I ad-libbed 10 times more than I usually do. I just went off," Gervais says of his performance stateside. "I just enjoyed myself more than I ever did before, and I want to keep that feeling now. It's like I hit the ball perfectly for the first time, I felt that racket. Now I know where to hit the ball every time, and I can't wait to do my next show."

Gervais has long been a fan of American comedy. He cites Laurel and Hardy, Groucho Marx and Woody Allen as major influences for his brand of what he calls "the comedy of embarrassment."

"America is my mecca for entertainment. Everything I have ever loved has come out of America," Gervais says. Those comics "taught me that you have to be at the bottom rung of the ladder. He says it's all about being the everyman and maintaining a fallible persona that people can relate to. "There should be no machismo in a comedian because comedy is about empathy," he says. "I think the audience doesn't need to be told that your life is better than theirs."

In Out of England, Gervais comes onstage with a king's crown and a rock star's pomp, accompanied by fireworks and Queen's "One World, One Vision." His ostentatious entrance is a tongue-in-cheek jab at production values and the idea of celebrity.

"Soon you find out that all my anecdotes of fame are about me being the underdog, me being embarrassed socially, depressed, everyone getting the better of me," he says.

Gervais says returning to stand-up has allowed him to discover the importance of physical comedy. He realized "what people liked was me acting out a scenario as opposed to just telling jokes," he says. "Because comedy is empathy, most of the things we identify with are probably nonverbal. Body language and the way that you feel things are are more important than what you hear."

His routine touches upon kids with cancer, Nelson Mandela and a dialogue between Nietzsche and Hitler, but Gervais says there are no real victims in his show. "When you live in a world where your firstborn isn't dying of terrible diseases and you're not being shot at, the worst thing that happens to us is we do embarrass ourselves."

...it may have sounded mean--but i was being honest.

It was brought to my attention that my previous blog was offensive. And though I don't wish to offend people--opinions seem to have that effect sometimes--and I happen to have many opinions!

To be fair, my workplace is filled with many great people--those who are courteous, friendly, hard working, respectful of the space and the property they are borrowing...and in the same breath, as I inhale from saying that sentence, I must follow it up immediately with the fact that it is also filled with many who are ignorant--people who lie, cheat, steal, are apathetic, are grossly insecure, are rude and self-centered. And as I lament about the "brainlessness" of it--I am not making commentary on any particular individual--but rather an overall workplace-culture where everyone must fend for themselves (kind of like capitalism), rarely help one another out, and constantly feel belittled by a company that sees them as nothing more than a cash-cow.

Don't get me wrong and please don't misunderstand--personal training and coaching different strength disciplines can be an art when you know what you're doing. Having the opportunity and ability to work with individuals one-on-one; bringing them to a place of heightened fitness is extremely rewarding. But just like in EVERY workplace, there are always those individuals who don't fit in--unfortunately for me, at this particular workplace, I'm one of those people.

Plain and simply...I don't like working for a corporation. I don't want to be another cog in the wheel--it's not who I am. While I continue at my post, making a lot of money for a little bit of people, I will continue to blog about it--as honestly as always. I will try my best to articulate my opinions so that they're specific and eloquent... I always hope not to offend, but rather to elicit thought.

So stay tuned for more Stories From The Gym!

A new blog thread for you: STORIES FROM THE GYM!

Lately I've been on a (CRAZY) political tangent. And though I am very passionate about politics, the fact of the matter is I'm an athlete first and foremost. I'm all about The Greater Good, but I'm an athlete at the core. That said, I've decided to start a new thread called: "Stories From the Gym"... I figured you all would benefit from the drama, the hilarity, and the ridiculousness that encompass The Gym--my daily workplace.

I'm a strength coach. And I work in a gym. Most days I can't stand where I work--the lighting, the brainlessness of it all, the fixation on asthetics, and of course working for a corporation (UGH!). If I were to fairly describe myself at work--I'm the girl that is stronger, faster, and WAY more agile than the average. I train athletes and non athletes while talking about politics during their breaks. In a nutshell--that's me. I'd like to say that I get along with everyone, but that's just a pipedream.

Relavent Tangent: During university I often worked in restaurants to make some extra cash to survive (and naturally, to afford to party). After years of this type of work, I finally decided that I would NEVER work in a restaurant--EVER again. The pay was terrible, and at the risk of sounding elitist, I can do better than that--I'm a smart woman. Little did I know that working in a gym would be just as bad... if not worse (actually it's worse). Honestly, I have never worked in an environment that is more unprofessional in my life. Sometimes my workplace is a scene straight out of an MTV reality show--if you're not cool enough, fit enough, successful enough--pack your bags because you're going to get voted off!

To be fair, I have a couple of friends there (4 to be exact)--people that I truly respect and like... but for the most part, I feel as though I am in a reality television show without a confessional to turn to (but then again, that's where you come in!).

That said... here is my "Story From the Gym" of the day. I shall call it "BEASTERIOD"--out of hilarity

There is a group of us that hang out around this one table. We're actually confined to it because we just got a new general manager and her main goal (and this is a quote--obtained through hearsay of course) is "to make sure trainers are no longer sitting around".

In case you are unaware of this fact, trainers are slaves to their clients. If we cannot find a client to fill a time slot, we are either eating, working out, or sitting around-- and there are only so many times that you can eat or work out. Though our managers would love to have us prospecting (gaining more clients=making the corp more $) during this time, the fact of the matter is, they don't pay us to prospect... so we don't if we don't need to.

Back to our table; I digress... So today, our little group--there are 7 of us who regularly converse and are in my opinion the 'tightest knit' group at The Gym: Me, 'the Relative', 'the Footballer', 'Portugal', 'the Fighter', 'Greece' and sometimes 'the Newfie'. Today we (Relative, Portugal, and Footballer) were sitting around and talking about some of the newer members at our particular location. New members are like a new classroom for teachers--they change on a regular basis and you never know what you're going to get...

Today we were discussing a new member who is particularly built for a female. Not that it is a good or bad thing, but in her first week as a new member, she has garnered quite the reputation for herself. Last week Greece had a run-in with her when he mistakenly used one of her machines during her workout. According to his personal description of the story, she started yelling and cursing and speaking in another language when she realized he had been using her machine. For a group of people who spend about 4 hours a day sitting around, this was interesting news. We laughed about this and were a bit scared of having similar run-ins with her in the future.

ENTER ENID: seriously... it's just my luck....

Today I had a business meeting and I was dressed up when I got to The Gym. My hair was done, I was wearing jewelry (which never happens otherwise) and I was wearing make-up. I didn't have many clients, but the few time-slots that I did have happened to be when the yelling--cursing lady was working out. We shall call her Ms. H.

When I describe this woman to you, I want you to visualize the following: petite, about 5'3", very long, dark hair, and a very defined and built physique (think HYPERTROPHY). In my opinion, she may not have gained this strength by natural means. (And not to be a jerk, but she has a very low voice to prove my previous claim--see my earlier post about the steroids documentary)

During one of my training sessions--which I was successfully accomplishing without disturbing anyone else--Ms. Hypertrophy herself, in person, decides to come up to be and ask:

"ARE YOU USING DIS BALL" (be sure to say with a low voice--envision a voice that drinks whiskey in the morning DAILY and smokes ten cigarettes a day... then add a European accent).

I kindly answered: "Yes. We are still using this ball. But we'd be glad to share". (referring to the stability/swiss ball we were using)

She says: "I don like to share (cue eye-roll, then eye-lock and 3 second stare). I vill get my own" (don't forget the whiskey and the cigarette voice-rasp)

My poor client was like 'what the hell is going on'. It was honestly the most awkward/unecessary moment--everyone seemed to be locked into our small and insignificant discussion. Naturally, it wouldn't be a true moment from The Gym if there weren't about 2 or 3 trainers/co-workers in the vicinity to share in the experience. As soon as she walked away, another trainer said (outloud) "Watch out E... don't mess with her" and yet another one said: "don't worry, I've got your back"... it was surreal--sometimes I feel the need to look for the cameras. After our little 3 sentence conversation, she went back to the mirror where she stared at herself and danced (with herself) to the music. It was positively amazing.

In any case, it was just another day on the job. And while it's quite hilarious, I wonder why Ms. H (or as my co-workers lovingly refer to her "Beasteroid"--I'm shaking my head as I type the name) came up to me in the first place. Honestly, there were 3 other Stability Balls, in our immediate vicinity, that were not being used.

Something tells me this won't be our last run-in. We'll see what happens next. Maybe she'll challenge me to a tricep-pushup test... who knows? In any case, there is no telling what could happen at The Gym... tune in for updates.

Until next time...on "Stories From The Gym"...

Will Ms. H ask me on a date? Or will she curse me out for kicking her out of the "Trainer's Only Section"... we shall see!

...READ THIS... it's for the greater good!

Recently, I have been wondering about the United States and its seemingly incestuous relationship with Israel. I use the word incestuous because, well... it kind of feels that way--everyone knows about their strong alliance, but people seem afraid to talk about it... and more importantly, the realities of it = lot's of bombs, missles, and war!

With Barrack Obama's first cabinet appointment being Rahm Emmanuel--a prominent politician with strong Israeli ties--I have become increasingly interested in this topic, particularly in the reason for its sensitivity. And I am determined to get to the bottom of it, so naturally, I have been asking around. I get the history of the relationship--how they met, the long strolls on the beach, the backseat of the car, etc. etc. But, I can't seem to figure out who is telling which what to do--is Israel calling the shots when it comes to the US's actions in the middle east? Or is it the other way around?

While most people I know listen to music and watch the hills, I'm usually at home cracking-out, Amy-Winehouse-Style (ouch!) to CBC and NPR--I can't even help myself!

Today, as I was cooking, I was listening to the CBC and coincidentally a former Israeli soldier was speaking about his experience in the military. And to my 'shock-and-awe', he was speaking out against it. Literally, I was shocked. I even turned off the water so that I could listen!

I learned that he has started an organization called "Breaking the Silence". It is the first organization where soldiers are speaking out about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict--calling it an occupation and discussing the ways in which it is immoral and wrong.

WAIT A MINUTE... ARE HUMAN BEINGS EVOLVING BEFORE OUR EYES OR WHAT!!!??

Anyway, I found this extremely interesting and a bit AWESOME. As some of you may or may not know, I am quite supportive of those of us who openly and loudly question the wrong-doings of our governments, our politicians, our CEOs and our militaries--in my opinion it is our duty to question those who have an abundance of power; as those of us who follow blindly are simply unpatriotic (and a bit ignorant).

Below is an excerpt from the organizations' home page--check it out.

LISTEN: This may not be your cup of tea or something you particularly care about--but it's SUPER important. Soldiers who serve in the Territories are witness to, and participate in military actions which change them immensely. Cases of abuse towards Palestinians, looting, and destruction of property have been the norm for years, but are still excused as military necessities, or explained as extreme and unique cases. Our testimonies portray a different and grim picture of questionable orders in many areas regarding Palestinian civilians. These demonstrate the depth of corruption which is spreading in the Israeli military."

Very Cool Discovery - Sia

Maybe you've heard of her...
Her name is Sia. The reason being is that most progressives I know, whose blogs I read, whose podcasts I download, whose meetings I attend; are simply some of the most brilliant individuals I have ever met. Individuals who are passionate about changing the world and who have an unwavering command of both language and history. I've definitely got the passion part covered, but I guess we all need to start somewhere right?

That said, as an American ex-pat--with a unique experience--I can't understand why Progressives cannot appreciate Barack Obama. Before he has even started, many are talking, blogging, and podcasting away about him in a negative light. The reasons? He's pro-war, pro-capitalism, pro-death penalty, pro-Israeli lobbying machine (Rahm Emanuel anyone?) and anti-gay marriage (I'm sure there is more to add to the list).

Even though these are all reasons I completely agree with (aside from the Israeli issue--as I am still studying this issue). I disagree with the tone of the very progressives I look up to. The fact of the matter is this: I am a strong advocate for Human Rights--a true egalitarianist. I believe that all people should be treated equally--regardless of race, heritage, religion, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, illness, etc. I am (now) anti-war and I am anti-death penalty. But here's the thing, when it comes to Barack Obama, the fact of the matter is that he IS American. And I am not exactly sure everyone really knows what that means.

What does it mean? If you are well versed in American culture, you'll know that Americans are indoctrinated with "Americanism" at a very young age. Americanism is something I would describe as a sense of immense pride, entitlement, and arrogance having to do with nothing other than the fact that you were born in a particular place--which happens to be called the United States of America. It doesn't matter if you're white, black, hispanic, poor, rich, educated, or a drop out. Most all Americans wear their sense of pride on their arm like a tattoo--no matter what the government has done or failed to do for you. Americans are simply very proud to hold that title, because they are taught to be proud of it.

It's something we were taught in kindergarten as we stood EACH AND EVERY DAY to say the pledge of alligence, for 13 years until we finished high school. It's the way that Americans were only taught about American history and never about the history of the world--but through only very brief fly-bys. It's the way parts were left out--like the way the government spent decades oppressing Black Americans, or the way Japanese Americans were placed in quazi-concentration camps, or even the parts that talk about the slaughtering of Native Americans, or the fact that the US dropped more than a couple of atom bombs on innocent people in Japan--nah, we didn't focus on that. We learned about the victories, the great accomplishments of our fore fathers, the amazing American inventors, the millionaires, and the innovators. We learned about the amazing non-violent activists like Martin Luther King and Ghandi--we never learned about Malcolm X. Somehow we managed to skip over that stuff.

Every year we celebrated--in a big, elaborate fashion--the 4th of July; Independance day, everyone had that day off. We even celebrated the guy who founded the United States by complete accident--Christopher Columbus. Living in the United States, no matter how abused you actually were, was sold as a priviledge. We were a melting pot and we understood that people from all over the world, who had it much worse, risked their lives to live there, to be around us, and we were proud of that. 20-plus years of indoctrination is really hard to wash off... believe me.

Naturally, there are many who were lucky enough to learn a different way of thinking--a more progressive world view. This difference in thinking was likely due to a role model, or an awakening of some sort that they were fortunate enough to encounter. For many it was war that changed them, or it was the civil rights struggle, or the struggle of being a Gay American--those who weren't giddy with Americanism had likely experienced oppression and they sought to fight against it. However, for the most part, most Americans never got there. And many are still nowhere near.

To be honest, for most of my life, I was a completely different person than I am today. It took a blantent and painful swipe of human & civil rights, by the United States government, for me to truly "awaken". But the truth remains, for the longest time I was just like most Americans. I was like the American that thought war is a normal "American" activity--as our history teachers so proudly highlighted. The American that thought capitalism is the tool that will set the world free (laugh out loud). I even believed, for twently some odd years, that I was actually free...most Americans still believe this. Now, when I look back, it is painfully obvious to me I was indoctrinated--with no hope of realizing any different reality because there was no reason for me to question it.

If you take what I've said into consideration and apply it accordingly to Americans in general and to Barack Obama who is also American, how can you not look at him through respectful eyes--when he is clearly of good intent? After experiencing the contrary for 8 years, how can we as progressives openly complain about things that are beyond the comprehension of many Americans? The truth is most Americans think war is justifyable. Most Americans also think capitalism is fine and dandy--most can't even consider an alternative, as they were never truly taught any. Think about it. If being American means you've been indoctrinated with Americanism for your entire life, how does one expect the American public to elect someone like Ralph Nader; who presents solutions that are alien to the way most Americans think--even if those solutions are the right ones?

And in conclusion, consider this: Barack Obama is a man of color. A man who was in close acquaintance with a person like Jeremiah Wright (J.W. is not who the media says he is, you should read about him). A man who has been to Kenya to visit siblings that live in shacks. A man who is from a background which deviates drastically from that of the average American President. Honestly...What makes you think he's not just playing the game? What makes you think he's so middle of the road? Clearly he's brilliant--just use the campaign he just ran as proof...Even if he's playing no game at all, and he's just an American who has good intentions...he's still American. See what I'm saying?

Voting for a candidate like Ralph Nader and then complaining about why no else is voting for him gets us nowhere. Recognizing why no one votes for candidates like Ralph Nader and then figuring out how to educate a nation of people who think like Americans makes more sense and is equally as futile. But I'm no Pulitzer Prize Winner so what the eff do I know right?

So I ask this: Even though Progressives know what is right... do we know how to play the game?

...I had to sit still... so I could take it all in...here is the re-cap.

Apologies for the giant blog-pause that I took this week.

To be honest, I am still recovering from Obama's win this past Tuesday. And while we're on an honesty kick, I should let you know that I really did not think he was going to be elected. Somewhere, at the very front and center of my consciousness, I truly did not believe the media was being truthful in its polling or its reporting. Instead, I listened faithfully to the progressive media outlets--who were faithfully reporting cases of voter purging, voter caging, brigades of soldiers on-call for the upcoming riots, fields of fema coffins...ALL very TRUE, yet fear inducing enough to stress me out for a decade!

Call me cynical, pessimistic, skeptical, distrustful, contemptuous--your choice really--the truth is after two stolen elections, eight years of Bush, a war for the sake of capitalism, torture of innocent individuals, the slaughtering of THOUSANDS of innocent Iraqi's and Afghanis, not to mention my own personal exodus from my homeland (due solely to many of the political reasons stated above)... how could anyone really expect me, of all people, to believe America would make a good choice

So, in the end...I was wrong. THANK GOD!

I spent Tuesday night with some of the best and most brilliant people I know; as I decided to make an event of the evening (Aparrently politics = party in my book). We all huddled together in a pub and many of my friends experienced the part of my life that I usually reserve for my blog and for the like-minded (politically charged) people in my life. In any case, it turned out to be one of the most incredible and memorable nights of my life... here's why:

1) If your friends like you enough, they'll party with you over politics

My friends, who don't exactly follow politics with the same fervor, came out--on a Tuesday night--to watch the American election...in Canada. I was very appreciative of their in-person-support. And I love them for it.

2) 10th Grade Logic Question: Barack Obama won AND Barack Obama is a bi-racial American. Why does that matter if and only if Barack Obama is a bi-racial American? (remember that shit? I hated logic!)

Here's why: in 1954, the United States government passed legislation to end segregation. However, in 1964, ten years later, people were still killing one another over race related issues. In addition to being shot with fire hoses and attacked with dogs for protesting, many black Americans were still unable to vote at that time--they had little to no civil rights and it was because of a government that failed to treat black Americans like Americans. That was only 44 years ago. In less than half of a lifetime, Americans, by an overwhelming majority, have elected a black president. This is a BEAUTIFUL reality! (I had originally said it was incredible, but it is actually beautiful. Think about it.)

As someone who personally grew up in an ethnic household with two parents that both personally experienced racism and discrimination--this means the world to me. It means that America is finally growing up. In my opinion, when a nation recognizes all of its citizens and the people of its land as HUMAN BEINGS, it is STEP ONE towards becoming a true nation. (Considering this as the first step, is actually an over statement on my part due to the current treatment of Mexicans and homosexuals in the US---but it's a baby step and definitely a step in the right direction). I am happy beyond belief that for once the true character of an individual is what people are basing their votes upon as opposed to the color of one's skin or the descent of their ancestors.

It also meant a lot to me because, plain and simply, the better guy beat the bad guy! Here's the thing about Obama, he's not exactly a liberal. He's liberal when you compare him to American politicians and you take into consideration how far right America has crept... but in the grand scheme of reality--he's still pro-war, pro-patriot act, anti gay marriage, and pro-capitalism--all things liberals disagree with. Many progressives think he is not much different than anyone else... I beg to differ and think he's a big step up from the alternative. The fact of the matter is when you compare the choices, he was hands down the best choice. And to the Progressives of the world: When you're talking about the United States... think baby steps! I'm from there, and even I know that baby steps are a big deal!

...back to the recap:

When they announced that Obama won, I still couldn't believe it--I kept saying: "it's only a projection"... however I soon received a text from a friend, whose father is an editor at The New York Times. The text said that the paper had just sent to print the issue declaring Obama's as the winner. I guess that sealed the deal. We were all jumping up and down, cheering, hugging... it was fantastic!

3) It was like my favorite team just won the Stanley Cup and I don't even like hockey!!!

After the announcement, we all headed down to Dundas Square. The rumor was they were going to show Obama's speech on a big screen in the square... Unfortunately, that was a rumor. Instead, when we arrived, we joined into a great celebration of people dancing and singing and hugging and cheering... my partner and I just kept looking at one another in awe... It was like nothing we'd ever seen before. In the states, people only cheer like that when sports teams win. It made my little, hippie, heart melt!

4) And the grand finale--Typsy Tears of Joy!

We headed to the Imperial Pub to watch the new "President Elect" give his speech. I didn't know what to expect, but I certainly didn't expect the 1992 television set with volume lower than the iPod blasting out of a meathead's ears at the gym! About 150 people where watching with their necks strained forward, shushing the few drunkards in the room who were being rowdy. I was surprised and reassured by the business-like tone of his speech and I was touched by the restored hope that seemed to be pouring from the public. I think I even shed a couple of tears when I looked into the eyes of a fellow New Yorker who happened to be in the vicinity... but I am sure that was due, in part, to my good old friends: Guinness, Maudite, and Keiths...
It was a good night for so many reasons, well four reasons actually.

So here's the question everyone is asking:

Will Barack Obama CHANGE anything? It's a fantasy of mine that he's a hell of a lot more liberal than he lead us to believe--and, once in office, he actually becomes a liberal! In my opinion, that would be an excellent deception... it would be exactly like G-Dub, except the reciprocal!

The reality is he likely won't change much... we'll all just have to wait and see. I'm truly hoping to see what he'll do about green technologies... We NEED to start focusing on the environment, and if that is all we get out of him, I know for sure that is far better than what the alternative would have been.

So here's to change...
cheers.

...to those of you who are my friends...

...to those of you who are my friends...

I cannot describe to you the feeling of happiness I am currently feeling--it is something bigger than me; bigger than you. Why can't I seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel? Why aren't I drunk with Blue-State Giddiness knowing that Obama is ahead in the polls? Well it could be one of two things: because I'm currently listening to Deathcab for Cutie... or, because I've been hoping for a long time now that people would wake-up and take it to the streets. Impeach a couple of neocons, fight to end the war(s), make sure our government is doing the right thing, wake up from the consumerist-coma we've been in for the past 10 years...

We haven't awoken yet.

I hope with all of my heart that I am wrong. Dead wrong. I hope Barack Obama becomes the next President of the United States. That he fights for human rights, peace, equality--all of the great things he has been promising for the past year that he's been campaigning...

On Tuesday night, I will watch, with hopeful-faithfulness (a Bushism I think), as the USA elects its next president.

So, here's to having a little bit of faith...and a nice, cold beer while I'm at it!

If you too are having trouble staying hopeful, Check this out...

Cheers,
E

E.B.'s Pub... shit only a drunk person would say...

More about the media, not so much about pop culture:

I just watched a reality show, whose identity I will not disclose (out of embarrassment). On the show tonight one young women, who looks like a barbie doll (anatomically disproportionate, with long straight, perfect hair, perfectly lined eyes, an innocent/clueless personality) and works at a recording studio for a major record label--dumped her boyfriend on camera. During "The Dump" (which inevitably began with the sentence: "I don't think this is working out) the y.w. actually took a bite of food and then continued to tell him what a special guy he is while she chewed it! Amazing. Did I mention she walked out in the middle of a recording session where a famous and talented music star was in mid-song? Awesome.

The episode also included a y.w. who looks, literally, like a muppet--lot's of plastic surgery, collagen lips, bleach blond, perfect looking hair--the works. This "muppet" stared into the camera incessantly while obsessively playing with her hair and occasionally flashing a sexy yet sinister look as she delivered a line. No word yet if her camera glances and sexy-fidgeting were due to insecurities in her appearance or desperate attempts to look sexy. Likely both.

In this episode I witnessed social manipulation and powerplays, unnecessary urging for confrontation, emotional abuse and back stabbing. All the while, the extremely tolerant, pious, kind nature of one character lingered as the main storyline.

All of the young women and men on the show are quite affluent (with their famous industry parents conveniently left out of the plot) they are often taking private jets & limos, sporting the finest couture, and landing the coolest jobs/internships in the land. Their life, it seems, is a dream-come-true--well except for some guy in Florida who will forever be known as the guy who got dumped on television...anyway, they are, it seems, the representatives of a generation.

Quite an interesting American show, eh?

What is interesting to me is the way they are portrayed as real people. Think about it. It's a reality television show. With this title alone, the producers of the show are telling us that these are REAL people and this is the way REAL people act. And they are also rewarded with fame and wealth for acting the way that they do: talking behind each others' back, cheating on one another, manipulating each other, purposely ending friendships, verbalizing their hatred of one another, being blatantly obsessed with their appearance, never (ever) talking about what is actually happening in the world, and showing complete and utter devotion to looking/being perceived as cool. They have no black or gay friends and they appear regularly on various talk shows (Ellen, David Letterman, The View) to enforce their fame and flaunt their fortune.

My question is this--if the mainstream media is promoting these "real" people as a generation's idols and role models--complete with the wealth, fame, and beauty their generation desires wholeheartedly--isn't that the same as attempting to create-through influence, a generation of assholes?

Why would the mainstream media do that?

...if it made you think...

Read this blog... And though it is frustrating to hear this very common reaction--there is no doubt in my mind that there is plenty of truth to what I am trying to tell you. I am trying to tell you, in the simplest of words that the United States Government is not finished plotting and practicing the evil deeds it began to commit in 2001.

Their track record says it all:

using tragedy to gain power -- 9/11 and most recently the tanking of the economy

using ruthless propaganda and flat out lies--where do I begin? Weapons of Mass Destruction, Sadam Husseins ties with Al Queida, or the McCain Campaign calling Obama a terrorist?

Torture? WTF!

The Military Stop-Loss policy--a secret way for the government to use and reuse and then reuse troops.... over and over...

Preemptive War, preemptive raids, survaillance of citizens

allowing and even encouraging racism and hate speech at rallies and elsewhere

controlling the media--Fox News, is this what we call respectable journalism?

a questionable aliance with the Bin Laden family which was (suspiciously) NEVER legally, publically, questioned by congress. Where is Kenneth Star?

ENRON?

lying about a $700 billion dollar Bailout Bill--which according to MANY economists, was unnecessary and misused; as there was plenty of hidden agenda contained inside of a bill, comprised of hundreds of pages, that Senate only had hours to read and then vote upon

stolen elections of the past (hanging chads anyone?) and more recently, countless reports from all over the nation of people being purged from the voter roles and voter caging

Let's face it, these guys--the Bush Administration, the One-Percenters, the Neocons--are plotting some serious, Voldemort-Style, world domination and it's obvious (to me at least) that they plan on gaining it by any means necessary.

The fact of the matter is, and not to scare the shit out of anyone, but this is REALLY happening. It's not a movie, it's not a commercial in a movie--it's a real commercial that was run in the United States by MTV. Can you believe that? A commercial comparing today to the days of Holocaust... this is real.

So instead of remaining in your current state of blissful-ignoring (i.e. denial) Let's try to think of what we can do to stop it! We can stop this from happening--whether it's on the horizon or not.

Check out this book: "Give me Liberty: A Handbook For American Revolutionaries", by Naomi Wolf. The book was written with the intention of helping us to fight the power and keep our freedom. After all, if it happens in the US... whose to say they'll respect the borders and let Canada live freely? What's the likelihood with Harper in charge?

My point is this: how can it be "conspiracy theory" if MTV is saying it too? It doesn't get more Mainstream than that. Think about it.

**Link to Citizen Against Lies. I sent this link to Shelly, who writes this blog, and she was just as astonished by the video as I was. She said she would post on it tonight and it will definitely be interesting to learn her point of view.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://enidbloomelleblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/mtv-warns-public-about-martial-law-and.html' title='MTV warns the public about Martial Law and Concentration camps... It's not that I'm obsessed with the way I look, it's just that I consider myself to be an athlete and staying fit is a vital part of that consideration. In any case, the gym has become my second home and while there, I've learned quite a bit.

At the gym, there is no shortage of interesting characters--the meatheads, the magazine girls, the people who have clearly never touched a weight before, the athletes, the socializers, the group-exercise-class-groupies, those who are addicted to spinning, the gym-rats, those who are medically mandated to train (mostly older population), and of course those who try extremely hard but have all of the wrong moves.

Every once in a while, you'll see a guy (or a gal) and you'll wonder to yourself: "are they on steroids?" For most people, the thought of using steroids is a crazy one, but for others--those who make a living by using their body (athletes, strippers, models, body builders), those who are plain obsessed, and of course, those who work in the industry--steroids is a reality.

A friend and coworker of mine suggested I watch a documentary called BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER. He suggested it because he thought I would like it--he was right. It's a documentary about an American guy who grew up in New York with 2 brothers. Growing up, their childhood obsessions were muscles, wrestling, and being the strongest boy in school and in the house. All three brothers followed their dreams to become professional power lifters/wrestlers. The film follows the main character as he grapples to understand why his 2 brothers are addicted to using steroids and he is not. The documentary evolves into a search for the truth about steroids--are they really harmful? And if not, why the big fuss?

I watched it and thought it to be one of the best I've ever seen--insightful, funny, and a bit genius at times. So, that said, if you're a fitness-punk like I am, this film comes highly suggested--if you're a fitness-punk AND you're American than that's even better.

CHECK IT OUT (of Blockbuster) It really makes you think about society, growing-up American, and of course...the culture's obsession with STEROIDS!<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; They are a waste of our time and a diversion from the reality of what is really happening in the world... but since the people in this picture are not exactly celebrities, I decided that--just this once, for the sake of continuity with what I have been posting lately--I would post them. (Que the loser sound from The Price is Right )

Anyway, check out these pictures. They are of 2 reality television stars who have managed to get their pictures in every gossip rag at your local grosser. I thought these photos were really interesting. Let's discuss this for a moment:

Her shirt says: "Read My Lipstick, Vote McCain-Palin", His shirt says: "Palin for VP: God, Guns, Glory", He is holding a couple bottles of Budweiser, a gun, and a book called: "You Can Profit From a Monetary Crisis", while she is dressed as scantily as possible. They are clearly being photographed in Malibu.

So here is my question: These two are notorious for doing anything to make sure they remain in any kind of spotlight, however, is it possible that they are not as "dumb" as they are considered to be?

I hope, with all of my heart, that young people of the world, Americans in this particular case, are against war--plain and simply because we're the ones who will have to deal with the severe repurcussions of it in the future--not to mention that there are plenty of OTHER great ways to solve foreign and/or domestic issues. I mean, obviously there will be young people who will vote Neocon this election, however, I honestly cannot believe that ANYONE, my age, would want to vote for John McCain and Sara Palin on purpose--I simply cannot believe it! Call me ignorant but I think that's crazy! CraaaaAAAZEEEEY.....

That said, something tells me that there is a hint of sarcasm and almost brilliance to these (obviously staged) photos. Think about it: If you know people don't take you seriously and basically dislike your public/self-created persona--what would you do to back something you really believed in. If I were them, and I knew people loathed me, and I really cared about this election... I would pretend I liked McCain-Palin too (....well.... maybe not. I can't fake anything!)...

Though I don't care for these individuals particularly--because, well, who cares? I have to hand it to them--I think these photos are amusing and indicative of EXACTLY what the McCain/Palin Campaign claims to be. Here's to some pop-cultural satire for your Thursday afternoon!

<img style="cursor: pointer; Citizen Against Lies there is an investigative report by Rolling Stone Magazine about stolen votes in the US. It claims that the vote has already been stolen by the GOP. According to this article, there are 9 different ways that the GOP plans to "steal votes". A portion of the article is listed below as well as a 2-Part related video by Greg Palast of the BBC--it's not the best, but I will to do some more investigating to learn more about this... It is a video, posted on YouTube by Aljazeera Television, interviewing Americans at a Sara Palin rally in Ohio (take notice of all of the SUVs). Not only is this video disturbing, but it is also sad and terrifying. How is it even possible that racism, ignorance, and plain disregard for other human beings exists so openly in the United States--at a Republican Rally for the Vice Presidential Candidate nonetheless.

I am ashamed to be American after watching this video and I thank God to have been born in a blue state, with liberal-minded parents... Honestly, thanks be to God! Yes, that's right, I believe in God--AND a woman's right to choose, and gay marriage, and heterosexual marriage, and sports, and progressive politics, and environmentalism, and sex before marriage, and divorce, and condoms, and birth control, and wearing mini skirts, and education, and immigration reform, and election reform, and investing in Green Technologies, and rebuilding New Orleans--as far as I'm concerned one thing has NOTHING to do with the other.

I pray to God regularly and I believe that belief systems are personal and individual--not something to be forced on to others. The belief in God, religion, and the likes are meant to be sources of goodness and hope in one's life. They are ways for the individual to find quiet strength in all situations--they are never political and they are not the same for everyone. It is individual. Believing in a God, praying, practicing a religion, shit... even practicing yoga is about finding the good in yourself and attempting to make yourself the best person possible. The act of gaining more followers for your way of thinking does not get you points--Religion is not a sport and God is not the coach looking at his lineup!

Honestly, if "being filled with the holy spirit" means encouraging, condoning, and rallying hate... then Sara Palin and the people in this video (and anyone else who thinks this way) can take the holy spirit and shove him where the sun doesn't shine. If that offends you, I apologize.

In Conclusion, I don't know how many times I have to say this but... RELIGION AND POLITICS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ONE ANOTHER... If you want to live in a holy land, then move your ass to Vatican City. The United States was founded in order for people to be free to believe what they like without the government oppressing or imposing on their beliefs. It is the beauty of our Bill of Rights, currently being eroded by a neo-con agenda. Religion is INDIVIDUAL... simple as that. IT'S INDIVIDUAL.
Rant over and out.

SIDE NOTE: Ironically, I would bet you any amount of money that these people would lose it if they knew Aljazeera that was interviewing them... funny eh?

And PS. to the old woman with the Cosby sweater: It's quite possible that you indeed can be considered as "trash" by some haters out there. And believe me, it has nothing to do with the fact that you're white. I can assure you that Barack Obama does not hate white people--what does "white people" even mean anyway?

More comments please!

Thanks Manny

...where have all the hippies gone?

i decided to post some of the best songs ever written. They're old school, they're revolutionary, They're fantastic! They help me believe we can make this world a better place...

THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED--it's true isn't it? Every time there is a protest with hundreds of thousands of people, do we see it on television? NEVER. The media picks and chooses what it shows to us. And just because they don't show it, does not mean it's not happening! Pick up your pickets people, it's time for revolution!

I'M A LOT LIKE YOU WERE. This next one, I love. It reminds of the Vietnam Era soldiers who were sent to fight an unjustified war. I feel like we can/should relate--thus, I love this song. Serious issues that seem to keep me up at night and cause endless word-vomit to spew from my lips through out the day. I verbalize that I'm angry so regularly that it is likely confirmed to most who know me, well... that I have anger issues. Here are my issues:

I'm angry at capitalism--not only because the big guys keeps getting richer, but because they're totally abusing the little guys.

I'm angry at the government(s) and their lack of interest in helping to fix the environment.

I'm angry at people who take advantage of others/organizations who are trying to actually help them--I have first hand experience with this and it's awful.

I'm angry at us for not treating other people like they're human beings--when you think about it, we are all the same. I know it, you know it, yet we can't seem to get it together.

I'm angry that having clean drinking water and food to eat isn't a basic human right. The fact that people go starving and have no clean water to drink while others toss it in the trash, by the truckload, is inconceivable to me.

Obviously, an intelligent person might ask: Well, what are you going to do about all of these extremely open ended and vague things you are soooo angry about Enid?

And to be completely honest, I'm not quite sure what the answer to that question is. I mean, what can I really do to change what seems like the impossible--especially when we continue to elect the same types of men to power (nothing wrong with men, but they don't exactly have the greatest track record when it comes to high office)? I've tried yoga, therapy, intense work outs, playing team sports, public speaking. I've tried activism but was disappointed because I was forced to deal with individuals who were more interested in their own individual gains than the gains of the group--and so, I quit.

We've all heard the saying "ignorance is bliss"--and believe me, there are days when I wish I was still that ignorant American girl who was obsessed with 'The Real World' on MTV, but the fact is, there's no going back. Things have changed drastically for me and I accept that. These days, what I obsess over mostly are the 5 things I wish I could change.

So is my anger due to an inability to act? Or is it a byproduct of the times in which we live? Do I go back to pretending that it's not really happening--like most of the people I know? Or do I continue to look for the best way that I can contribute? (<-- the best answer, I know)

I guess I need to sort it out eh?

**As an end note, I want to Thank Laura K. at wmtc for giving me a shout-out on her blog today. She's a pretty awesome lady and a true patriot. As for me, I'm working on it.

OHMmmmmmmmm.....

harper and his torys win, while visions of Stephan Dion dance in my head...

If it wasn't for the fact that I am currently coming down from severe anxiety from watching the conservative numbers steadily rise to One Hundred and Forty-Three last night, I'm sure I would be able to write more eloquently. Instead, I will shoot for writing coherently and condescend to a rant.

**Please note: I spent the entire night dreaming, not of sugar plums, but of Stephan Dion. In my dream, I kept telling Mr. Dion that it was all his fault... "All Your Fault!" I yelled.

Some might say that due to the fact I am not Canadian, I shouldn't have anything to say about Canadian politics--but considering that I know a hell of a lot more about Canadian politics than say, the average Canadian--I'll continue (and I mean nothing offensive by that last comment; it's true.)

In any case, why should I care? I'm just an immigrant right (ha)? Here's the thing, I left the states because I couldn't deal with a government comprised of opportunists who were living in their own alternative reality--you know a government that starts wars for no reason and then covers it up with breaking news stories about Paris Hilton on CNN. I came to Canada because I thought I'd have a better chance living amongst the self-proclaimed, "nicest people on the planet". It was great for a while until I learned about the political system here--same old shit, different GPS reading.

For those of you who are a bit clueless about the Canadian political system, I have provided quick and easy break down of each political party below (American style):

The Conservative Party:

Lead by the callous and robotic Stephen Harper--he has eyes like the scary old guy from 'Poltergeist'

They call themselves the Tories--a name termed from Great Britain in the 17th Century.

They have NO environmental policy...well really, they have no real platform. They simply think they are better than everyone else.

They won 144 seats in Parliament--picked up about 6 from the urban sprawlers who live on the outskirts of Toronto, in their McMansions while they drive their SUVs everywhere... basically people who think they're wealthy but aren't.

Stateside, they would be COMPARABLE to the neo-cons, also known as the Republican Party--in fact, Harper seemingly worships the ground George Bush walks on.

In my opinion, the ONE AND ONLY excuse one might have to vote for this morally corrupt party is if they are extremely wealthy. Otherwise all other votes are due to ignorance, brainwashing, and influence over the ignorant, which equals brainwashing... you get my drift.

The Liberal Party:

Lead by Stephan Dion--a very smart and kind man who has a bad accent--which is the main reason why most people (ignorant people) likely voted against him. "He's wimpy" they said.

They had a great environmental policy called "The Green Shift"--which was strangely very similar to the Green Party's environmental plan.

They won 76 seats in Parliment--won the city of Toronto almost entirely with exception to Olivia Chow (NDP) & Jack Layton (NDP) who kept their seats.

They are COMPARABLE to the Democrats in the states--they are (lately) viewed as a party who cannot make up their minds, seldom stands up for any issues and are even known to walk out of votes on good'ol P-Hill. (Ironically, i know ALL about this place, have been there a couple of times, even hung out in some MP's offices... so I can call it P-Hill if I'd like)

In my opinion, the Liberal Party was the best strategic vote for this particular election as in my mind, the one and only goal should have been to eject the conservatives from their seats. In any case, I suspect there will likely be a change in leadership with Michael Ignatieff & Bob Rae heading the march.

The Bloc Quebecois:

Lead by Gilles Duceppe

Originally a separatist party interested in mainly Quebec becoming its own country.

Won 50 seats last night--HOW??? great fucking question.

Was instrumental in blocking the Tories out of gaining enough seats in Quebec--which according to pundits was an EPIC FAIL on the part of the conservatives

This party only has ridings in Quebec--it's not exactly comparable to any party in the states... unless Arnold Schwartznegger starts his own politcal party called The Bloc Californians, which isn't too unlikely I suppose.

The New Democratic Party:

Lead by Jack Layton--who is the type of guy that could kick someone's ass--he's kind of like The Chuck Norris of Politics--a no-bullshit type of guy. And I like him!

They won a meager 37 seats

They would be COMPARABLE to a Blue Collar, Union supporting, Middle Class, liberal-minded party in the states--well, that's if there was a middle class in the states that wasn't composed of fanatical Christians.

They have policies and beliefs that tend to make sense to me, other activists that I am involved with (political & environmental), younger voters who are not influenced by their parents, minorities, and some very educated individuals that I happen to know. They seemingly support the everyday man and woman with no differentiation between the two. So I like that.

They deserved more seats in my opinion and also according the the popular vote!

The Green Party:

Hopefully a "renewable" and "self-sustaining" party

Became the center of attention during this election due to the NDP & Conservates attempting to keep the Greens out of the debates. May got in, and kicked everyone's ass!

These up-and-comers are lead by the very capable Elizabeth May--who is the antithesis of another high profile politician--"she who must not be named"

They were the only party to include campaign/voting reform as one of their platforms

They genuinely want to make Mother Earth a better place for us all to live and that's extremely important

940,000 voters supported the Green Party who SENT NO ONE to Parliament, setting a new record for the most votes cast for any party that gained no parliamentary representation. By comparison, 813,000 Conservative voters in Alberta alone were able to elect 27 MPs. Obviously I'm sure that others have found it first, but if you learn about this through me, it's good enough to pass on.

There is a podcast I recently started listening to called "The Cadence Revolution". And since I happen to be a gym-rat... in more ways than one, I have become addicted to this podcast. It's an hour plus of fast, upbeat music that is original, unique, and talks about REAL SHIT kids... you can't get much better than that.

Here are some other reasons why it's amazing:

1) IT'S FREE
2) It's created by independent artists from all over the world--NYC, India, you name it.
3) The music is created with the intention of the listener working out to it--so it's fast paced, but it can also be used as a pre-made party soundtrack
4) The lyrics are fantastic--the artists talk about very real things, here is an excerpt from the first song off of show #85: (<-- to take a listen, click there)

"damn you hollywood you got me good,
you made me think that i understood,
people and places that don't exist,
do not tremble in my way cause i'm shaking my fist at you,
none of these memories are mine, you put them in my mind..."

CHORUS: "we need to work it out, out from what we've seen,
seeing that the story's not the story of the screen,
this technicolor mess, well it's not what you came for!

It's delicious! and i love it! Here's the info:

Website: www.TheCadenceRevolution.com
Podcast URL: http://feeds.feedburner.com/CadenceRevolution

You should give it a listen. The similar foods, the similar traditions kept you connected. and after you finished eating, thanks to the graciousness of another, you were never expected to do anything yet you did anyway because you knew everyone else would pitch in, making the job quite insignificant in the end.

Thanksgiving is the most treasured american holiday because deep down inside americans really do think family is most important, even though we've never collectively acted that way.

It's not that CANADIANS have got it wrong, because for all i know they could simply prioritize family more so on the regular, therefore making the idea thanksgiving more commonplace. Irregardless, it still doesn't have the same effect for me.

It could be because i'm cynical these days (and angry at times)--which shouldn't surprise anyone when in comes to my thoughts pertaining the great super-power nation down south.

Yet something tells me it could also be because i'm lacking in the family department these days. thanksgiving simply isn't the same without your mom and siblings!

(photograph taken by me, my parents backyard)

E.B.'s Pub... shit only a drunk person would say...

i honestly love this blog. i feel like i can tell you whatever is on my mind; like i have someone to vent to... it's fantastic! i know you'll tell me what you think of me, tell me if i am ridiculous, tell me if i make great sense...and i like that. i like knowing that some of you i'll regard as my sister... and some of you, i'll regard as an evil step-parent who sucks...

blogging is good.

(photograph taken of me, drinking while camping)

the end of what? I have always been a firm believer in human intuition and its ability to warn of us peril in its own ominous and subtle way. I believe that most people do not depend or use this ability to their advantage as much as they should. Instead we suppress our own natural instinct and listen to what marketing firms have become so brilliant at: programming us. We're basically caught up in a manufactured state of 'iFear', 'iCool', 'iRight', 'iWrong'--you get my drift. Unfortunately, our lack of interest in reality has brought us to a point in history where the world is in absolute and utter crisis--economically, socially, and environmentally. Yet most people are still blind to what is happening; unable to become sober with the severity of the current situation.

I feel as though I have been talking about this underlying feeling of impending doom for a long time and just recently others are beginning to admit to feeling similarly. It feels as though something is about to end and it's an unsettling type of terrifying.

"This thing" which is seemingly coming to an end is ambiguous and vague and matters not. What matters is this unshakable feeling that I am about to fall fast and hard. As if I am standing on the very edge of a cliff; teetering and stammering in a desperate attempt to keep my balance even though I know I am about to plunge. It's that very last second before you fall and everything is in slow motion.

If the end is really near, I just wonder what "the end" is. And for the sake of all human beings, I truly hope it is the end of corruption, or inequality, or hatred, or poverty. Though I hate to sound like a finalist in a beauty pageant, I hope there is warm, crystal blue tropical water to break our fall...Fuck, I'll even take the Atlantic waters off the coast of Jersey. Anything but what is seemingly the inevitable.

(photograph taken by me, Toronto Island '08)

is there a chance that the media might start telling the truth for once.......

A friend of mine, a New Yorker, sent me the following article. It's a piece from Rolling Stone Magazine where the author, Tim Dickinson, exposes John McCain in a way no major media outlet has done before. I have seen and heard such commentary on left-wing blogs and podcast but never from a main stream publication such as RSM.

I find it quite interesting. It makes me wonder: is this election important enough to make people start paying attention? Are people beginning to demand the truth; fact check their politicians; ask pointed, intelligent questions; demand more from the media? .... a little spark of hope is arising inside of me

Give this article a read. It's a bit long, but it's insightful and it makes you wonder what the hell is going on. How are these guys able to trick us and lie the way they do? It's the spring of 1974, and Navy commander John Sidney McCain III has returned home from the experience in Hanoi that, according to legend, transformed him from a callow and reckless youth into a serious man of patriotism and purpose. Walking along the grounds at Fort McNair, McCain runs into John Dramesi, an Air Force lieutenant colonel who was also imprisoned and tortured in Vietnam.
McCain is studying at the National War College, a prestigious graduate program he had to pull strings with the Secretary of the Navy to get into. Dramesi is enrolled, on his own merit, at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in the building next door.

There's a distance between the two men that belies their shared experience in North Vietnam — call it an honor gap. Like many American POWs, McCain broke down under torture and offered a "confession" to his North Vietnamese captors. Dramesi, in contrast, attempted two daring escapes. For the second he was brutalized for a month with daily torture sessions that nearly killed him. His partner in the escape, Lt. Col. Ed Atterberry, didn't survive the mistreatment. But Dramesi never said a disloyal word, and for his heroism was awarded two Air Force Crosses, one of the service's highest distinctions. McCain would later hail him as "one of the toughest guys I've ever met."

On the grounds between the two brick colleges, the chitchat between the scion of four-star admirals and the son of a prizefighter turns to their academic travels; both colleges sponsor a trip abroad for young officers to network with military and political leaders in a distant corner of the globe.

"I'm going to the Middle East," Dramesi says. "McCain says his life changed while he was in Vietnam, and he is now a different man," Dramesi says today. "But he's still the undisciplined, spoiled brat that he was when he went in."

McCAIN FIRST

This is the story of the real John McCain, the one who has been hiding in plain sight. It is the story of a man who has consistently put his own advancement above all else, a man willing to say and do anything to achieve his ultimate ambition: to become commander in chief, ascending to the one position that would finally enable him to outrank his four-star father and grandfather.

In its broad strokes, McCain's life story is oddly similar to that of the current occupant of the White House. John Sidney McCain III and George Walker Bush both represent the third generation of American dynasties. Both were born into positions of privilege against which they rebelled into mediocrity. Both developed an uncanny social intelligence that allowed them to skate by with a minimum of mental exertion. Both struggled with booze and loutish behavior. At each step, with the aid of their fathers' powerful friends, both failed upward. And both shed their skins as Episcopalian members of the Washington elite to build political careers as self-styled, ranch-inhabiting Westerners who pray to Jesus in their wives' evangelical churches.

In one vital respect, however, the comparison is deeply unfair to the current president: George W. Bush was a much better pilot.
This, of course, is not the story McCain tells about himself. Few politicians have so actively, or successfully, crafted their own myth of greatness. In McCain's version of his life, he is a prodigal son who, steeled by his brutal internment in Vietnam, learned to put "country first." Remade by the Keating Five scandal that nearly wrecked his career, the story goes, McCain re-emerged as a "reformer" and a "maverick," righteously eschewing anything that "might even tangentially be construed as a less than proper use of my office."
It's a myth McCain has cultivated throughout his decades in Washington. But during the course of this year's campaign, the mask has slipped. "Let's face it," says Larry Wilkerson, a retired Army colonel who served as chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell. "John McCain made his reputation on the fact that he doesn't bend his principles for politics. That's just not true."

We have now watched McCain run twice for president. The first time he positioned himself as a principled centrist and decried the politics of Karl Rove and the influence of the religious right, imploring voters to judge candidates "by the example we set, by the way we conduct our campaigns, by the way we personally practice politics." After he lost in 2000, he jagged hard to the left — breaking with the president over taxes, drilling, judicial appointments, even flirting with joining the Democratic Party.

In his current campaign, however, McCain has become the kind of politician he ran against in 2000. He has embraced those he once denounced as "agents of intolerance," promised more drilling and deeper tax cuts, even compromised his vaunted opposition to torture. Intent on winning the presidency at all costs, he has reassembled the very team that so viciously smeared him and his family eight years ago, selecting as his running mate a born-again moose hunter whose only qualification for office is her ability to electrify Rove's base. And he has engaged in a "practice of politics" so deceptive that even Rove himself has denounced it, saying that the outright lies in McCain's campaign ads go "too far" and fail the "truth test."

The missing piece of this puzzle, says a former McCain confidant who has fallen out with the senator over his neoconservatism, is a third, never realized, campaign that McCain intended to run against Bush in 2004. "McCain wanted a rematch, based on ethics, campaign finance and Enron — the corrupt relationship between Bush's team and the corporate sector," says the former friend, a prominent conservative thinker with whom McCain shared his plans over the course of several dinners in 2001. "But when 9/11 happened, McCain saw his chance to challenge Bush again was robbed. He saw 9/11 gave Bush and his failed presidency a second life. He saw Bush and Cheney's ability to draw stark contrasts between black and white, villains and good guys. And that's why McCain changed." (The McCain campaign did not respond to numerous requests for comment from Rolling Stone.)

Indeed, many leading Republicans who once admired McCain see his recent contortions to appease the GOP base as the undoing of a maverick. "John McCain's ambition overrode his basic character," says Rita Hauser, who served on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board from 2001 to 2004. But the truth of the matter is that ambition is John McCain's basic character. Seen in the sweep of his seven-decade personal history, his pandering to the right is consistent with the only constant in his life: doing what's best for himself. To put the matter squarely: John McCain is his own special interest.

"John has made a pact with the devil," says Lincoln Chafee, the former GOP senator, who has been appalled at his one-time colleague's readiness to sacrifice principle for power. Chafee and McCain were the only Republicans to vote against the Bush tax cuts. They locked arms in opposition to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And they worked together in the "Gang of 14," which blocked some of Bush's worst judges from the federal bench.

"On all three — sadly, sadly, sadly — McCain has flip-flopped," Chafee says. And forget all the "Country First" sloganeering, he adds. "McCain is putting himself first. He's putting himself first in blinking neon lights."
to read the rest of this article... click here

the revolution will not be televised...

I just got finished watching the US Vice Presidential Debate and I'm disappointed. I'm angry that Joe Biden didn't make Palin look like the idiot she truly is--there were so many opportunities where he could have simply buried her. How many times can a person honestly repeat themselves? She is an embarrassment. How many times can she use the state of Alaska as an example? There are 50 other states with much larger populations and vastly different needs and problems--how is the state of Alaska the answer to every question pertaining to a nation of 50 other states? When did "hockey moms" become the priority voting group in the United States? When the did hockey become the most popular sport in the United States? Every buzz word that she used; every attempt at Neurolinguistic programming made me nauseous with the reality that there are people out there who would actually believe her. People who would actually think she was making good points. It made me cringe with anger as she stood up there regurgitating the ideology of white, male, neo-con, capitalists who have been in charge for centuries, making desperate attempts to de-educate, oppress, and discriminate against humans they consider of lesser value.

Is she a "maverick"? I laugh: No...she's a disaster.

I'm looking forward to Saturday Night in hopes that Tina Fey (a true modern feminist) will, once again, show the stupidity and naivety of a women who is doing nothing short of shattering the work of our mothers and grandmothers who fought for the many rights we take advantage of today--rights that Palin herself took advantage of as she stood smugly and ignorantly, smiling and WINKING on that podium tonight. It will be interesting to see what happens to her when she's through selling her soul.

If you're reading this, if you're a woman or a girl, if you're a man or a boy who believes in equality and human rights--make sure that you get out there and make your voice heard. It's more than just getting out and voting. Start paying attention.... really START PAYING ATTENTION.

This is not the time to be focused on your iLife, while listening to your iPod and watching The Hills--our future is on the line here. We--the little people, the poor, the "middle class"--WE outnumber the ones in power, yet we continue to take their abuse.

Start paying attention and be ready because the revolution will not be televised.

political satire at it's best...

Living as a Canadian, I really appreciate this video. Though I happen to like Layton and his idealistic views, it's very entertaining to watch the way he's portrayed in this video. I'm pulling for the Liberals, because sometimes you have to vote strategically in a situation with this many parties. I don't think I can continue to live here if there is a conservative majority... I'm not really sure who will read them, if anyone at all, but, I can't lie, it's a bit exciting to think someone might. The truth is that these days you're not always surrounded by people you know, or people who know you for that matter. It makes for a difficult time expressing what's really on your mind. And if you live in a city, like I do, it's even harder.

I've always been intrigued by blogging (since the days when it first became "mainstream" on the revolutionary pages on Myspace and "Generation Acronym" was still in high school) but I was reluctant because it seemed as though it was something only the kids were doing. I finally decided to pick up the dirty habit because, to be completely honest, I think I have a lot of good things to say. Things that don't pertain to celebrities, or fashion, or any other on-the-surface, bullshit conversation that saturates my ears (and CNN) these days.

As a potential regular in "E.B.'s Pub", I thought you might like to know some of my fundamental beliefs (in no particular order). So grab a cold one and enjoy!

~ KARMA. I basically believe if you're an asshole, chances are life will find a way to slap you around. And let's face it, most all assholes deserve to be slapped around. I don't consider myself an asshole, however I do think I have instantaneous karma. As a kid, if i cursed in the hallway at school, the principal or a teacher usually (always) seemed to be walking by at the exact same time (I still curse, but I'm an adult now so it's ok). Or if I returned something that I'd found, something valuable was always returned to me. It's an important part of who I am--some may think it's hokey, but so are religious fanatics. I try, desperately, to stay on the side of "good-karma".

~GOODNESS. If we all just tried to be good people, the world would be a completely different place. Think about it.

~HEALTH. It's so important and I am dumbfounded by how many people ignore their health. I believe that most sickness today is caused by the toxins we are constantly consuming: in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the processed foods that we eat.

~RELIGION. Well, I don't exactly believe in religion, it actually pisses me off.

~PEOPLE. I believe in us. I think we can be better and I hope to be right about this belief.

~CONSPIRACY THEORIES. I think 9-11 was rigged, I think a handful of people run the world, I think religion is a way to control the masses...

~EQUALITY. I believe in equality.
